Frequently asked questions

Common questions about equality and diversity

I’m being discriminated against by my colleagues, what should I do?

The NMC has no powers to intervene in discrimination that might be occurring in the workplace either from your colleagues or your employer.

If you feel you are experiencing discrimination and receiving unfair treatment you must speak to your employer about this; if you are a member of a union, they can help you or provide support through their equality and diversity networks. You can also get advice from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission who have a helpline service available. Details of their helpline in your country can be found at the Equality and Human Rights Commission website.

Am I allowed to wear religious symbols as part of my uniform?

Uniform guidelines are set and enforced by your employer, in most cases it would be reasonable to expect that religious symbols can be worn as part of your uniform where they do not conflict with health and safety or your ability to carry out your job.

I am an overseas nurse registered with the NMC but I am finding it difficult to find a job, is there anything the NMC can do to help?

Once any nurse and midwife has registered with the NMC and a Pin has been issued to practise in the UK, we have no power to find you a job, or have control over employers that discriminate against overseas job applicants.

If you feel you have been discriminated against by a prospective employer, you can contact the Equalities and Human Rights Commission who can advise you how to take the matter further through their helpline. Details of their helpline specific to your country can be found at the Equality and Human Rights Commission website.
