The Chair

Information about the function of the Chair.

The current Chair is Mark Addison CB.

Leading the Council

The Chair leads the Council in deciding the long term strategic goals for the NMC.

In Council sessions the Chair sets the agenda and leads the debate to ensure that decisions are made effectively and on the basis of thorough and well-reasoned evidence during the meetings.

The Chair makes sure Council members are compliant with the Code of conduct for members, and that they have adequate development and training opportunities.

Representing the Council and the NMC
The Chair represents the NMC with all our stakeholders in the UK and abroad, including members of the public, nurses and midwives, government and educators.

In particular the Chair works to build strong relationships with other regulatory bodies in the UK and abroad, and with our regulator, the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), previously known as the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE).

Working with the Chief Executive and Registrar
The Chair works with the Chief Executive and Registrar to make sure that the NMC's work, as laid out in the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001, is carried out to a high standard.

The Chair oversees the work of the Chief Executive and Registrar and also makes sure that there is effective communication between the Council and staff of the NMC.
