Lead midwives for education (LMEs)
Lead midwives for education (LMEs) help ensure high standards in midwifery education
Maintaining high standards in midwifery education
Midwifery education programmes in the UK can only be run at NMC-approved educational institutions.
The NMC ensures that standard of education programmes remains high through a network of heads of midwifery education called Lead Midwives for Education (LME).

Role of the LME
LMEs are based at and employed by the educational institutes providing pre-registration midwifery education. They are experienced practising midwife teachers leading on development, delivery and management of midwifery education programmes.
LMEs play a key role in informing the NMC on whether student midwives are of good character, health and are competent to undertake the role of a midwife at the end of their training.
LMEs are part of the NMC quality assurance process for ensuring high standards in midwifery education programmes.
If you have any questions regarding midwifery education please email qateam@nmc-uk.org.
Strategic Reference Group
All LMEs are members of the UK wide NMC Strategic Reference Group.
The main function of this group is to assist in advising the Midwifery Committee on proposals to make, amend or revoke rules relating to midwifery education, practice and supervision.
