Our processes
Understanding how we deal with cases after referral
Any referral of a nurse or midwife to the NMC must:
- identify the nurse or midwife concerned
- clearly explain the complaint against the nurse or midwife
- be supported by appropriate information and evidence.
There is no time limit for referrals - but it is much more difficult to investigate incidents that occurred a long time ago. We therefore encourage you to make your referrals when you have finished any local investigation or action.
We aim to complete all cases within 65 weeks. Sometimes, cases can take longer because it is difficult to gather evidence. Help us avoid unnecessary delays by responding quickly, with the information and your evidence readily available.
