Local Supervising Authorities (LSAs)
LSAs and LSAMO are explained here
LSAs are impartial organisations responsible for ensuring statutory supervision of midwives is undertaken according to NMC standards.
LSAs around the UK
England - Strategic Health Authorities
Northern Ireland – Public Health Agency
Scotland - Regional Boards
Wales - Health Inspectorate Wales
Every midwife practises within a LSA. The LSA ensures that all midwives in the area follow the NMC rules and standards.
Role of the Local supervising authority midwifery officer (LSAMO)
The LSA appoints a LSAMO to ensure that the processes of statutory supervision are in place.
- LSAMOs are a point of contact for supervisors of midwives for advice on aspects of supervision, especially difficult or challenging situations.
- LSAMOs provide leadership, support and guidance on a range of matters including professional development.
Women who seek help or support concerning their midwifery care can also contact the LSAMO directly.

Strategic Reference Group
All LSAMOs are members of the UK wide NMC Strategic Reference Group. The group advises the Midwifery Committee on any proposals to make, amend or revoke rules relating to the supervision, practice and education of midwives.
