Launch of High Impact Actions for Nursing and Midwifery

Date:29/06/2010

The NMC today welcomes the Chief Nursing Officer for England's publication of eight High Impact Actions for Nursing and Midwifery: The Essential Collection, which showcases inspirational case studies from all over the UK that are saving the NHS millions.

Drawn from over 600 submissions, the publication highlights examples of some of the innovative work being undertaken to improve the quality of care, while also significantly reducing costs. Nurses and midwives across the country have pledged their support for the eight actions by registering their names on a roll call.

The Essential Collection will be accompanied by two DVDs of video case studies, with examples of the actions including work on preventing avoidable pressure ulcers, promoting normal births and reducing patient dehydration and malnourishment.

Commenting on the publication, Chief Nursing Officer for England Christine Beasley said:

"Nurses and midwives are the largest single profession within the NHS for whom providing high quality care for patients will always be a priority. Every day there is a palpable enthusiasm within the NHS to make care better for patients and nowhere has this been better illustrated than when we launched the High Impact Actions for Nursing and Midwifery which resulted in 600 submissions from nurses and midwives from across the NHS keen to share their successes. "It is clear from the Essential Collection that the opportunity is enormous and that nurses and midwives are leading the way in delivering better care at lower cost. Our estimates show that if implemented across the board, these High Impact Actions could save the NHS millions of pounds a year."
