Nursing and Midwifery Council consultation report on proposed new standards for pre-registration nursing education

Date:30/07/2010

The Nursing and Midwifery Council has today published the findings of its consultation on the proposed new standards for pre-registration nursing education, along with its stakeholder engagement activity report.

The consultation asked for feedback on draft standards for pre-registration nursing education via an online survey and was accompanied by four smaller surveys which targeted harder to reach groups. These surveys were developed in partnership with a range of organisations to ensure the views of these groups were included.

The consultation was the final part of a wider engagement process in which over 5,000 individuals and organisations participated. This detailed consultation received over 600 responses from individuals and organisations. It asked questions about the standards and competencies that future nurses will need to demonstrate in order to become a registered nurse.

This important feedback, both from the engagement process and from the consultation indicated overall support for the new standards for pre-registration nursing education. Further work is currently being done to finalise the standards for publication in September 2010.

NMC Director of Standards and Registrations, Roger Thompson said:

"I would like to thank everyone who took the time to respond to our consultation and to the hundreds of people from across the UK who sat on one of the working groups, attended a workshop or contacted us via our e-portal.

"The feedback from the consultation, together with all our stakeholder activity over that past three years has helped us to refine the standards for pre-registration nursing education. In particular, the feedback from the smaller, targeted surveys and focus groups has been valuable in identifying key messages that will inform the development of new programmes. We believe this consultation has been instrumental in supporting us to modernise nursing and prepare the profession for challenges both now and in the future".
