Cancelling your registration with the NMC
How to leave the register
You may want to cancel your registration with us, for example if you are moving abroad, retiring from practice or changing career.
If you want to cancel your registration, you must notify us in writing using the 'Application to lapse your registration form' (doc). This requires you to provide your NMC Pin, full name, contact address, the reason for cancelling and a declaration stating that you are not aware of any matter which could give rise or has given rise to a fitness to practise allegation being made against you.
Please note that if you are receiving pay as a nurse or midwife, whilst on maternity, sick or annual leave, that you should clarify with your employer if cancelling your NMC registration will affect your contract of employment.
You can write to us at the following address:
Registration Department
Nursing and Midwifery Council
23 Portland Place
London
W1B 1PZ
Please note that nurses and midwives who are subject to a current or potential fitness to practise allegation need to apply for voluntary removal from the register. If you are not able to sign a declaration confirming that you are not aware of any matter which could give rise, or has given rise to a fitness to practise allegation being made against you, you must apply for voluntary removal using the voluntary removal application form
