Advanced practice independent evidence review

Find out more about our review
We committed to carrying out a comprehensive review of advanced nursing and midwifery practice, including consideration of whether regulation is needed, as part of our 2020-25 corporate strategy.
This follows the publication of our new post-registration standards in July 2022. These standards will provide those specialist community and public health nurses with these qualifications who wish to undertake advanced practice qualifications in future a head start along this path. Prof Geraldine Walters explains more in this blog.
To start this review, we’ve commissioned:
- The Nuffield Trust to undertake a literature review, and an assessment of the advanced practice landscape in all four countries of the UK, in conversation with key decision makers and subject matters experts
- Britain Thinks to run discussion groups with professionals currently working in advanced practice roles.
We will draw on these discussions and other evidence-gathering to advise our Council in 2023 about options and next steps – including considering whether any risks associated with advance practice should be mitigated by additional regulation – and if so, what form that might take.
If we consider making any changes we’ll work closely with our stakeholders in doing so. If you’d like to be kept up to date with our progress, and be notified of any opportunities to get involved, please sign up here.
