NMC congratulates Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent on international midwifery role

Published on 17 March 2023

Jacqueline Dunkley-Bent has been appointed as the first Chief Midwife for the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM).

Jacqueline will start her new role in May 2023, following four years as England’s first Chief Midwifery Officer. At the ICM, she will represent the interests of midwives around the world, and lead initiatives essential to the growth of midwifery globally.

Andrea Sutcliffe NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, said:

“On behalf of the NMC, I’d like to offer my warmest congratulations to Jacque on her appointment. This role will be vital in reinforcing the importance of midwifery globally, and it’s wonderful to see Jacque’s knowledge and expertise recognised on the world stage.

“Jacque has been influential in her role as Chief Midwifery Officer for England. She has provided inspirational support and leadership to the profession throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. She helped us to develop and implement our transformative Future Midwife standards. Jacque has also been a strong voice on our Midwifery Panel, in particular speaking up about the need to address discrimination and inequalities in maternity services.

“While we’ll miss working closely with Jacque, I’m confident that she’ll continue to be a powerful advocate for the safe, effective and kind midwifery care that women and babies have every right to expect across the globe.”
