NMC responds to Skills for Care findings on adult social care in 2022-23

Published on 12 October 2023

Skills for Care have published its annual State of the Adult Social Care Sector and Workforce in England report, and revealed plans to develop a new workforce strategy.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Andrea Sutcliffe, NMC Chief Executive and Registrar, said:

“I welcome Skills for Care’s plan to develop a comprehensive workforce strategy for adult social care amid the ongoing challenges facing the sector.

“Their annual report shows a small increase in registered nurses filled posts compared to the previous year. That’s good but it’s still 35% lower than 10 years ago when the need for these highly skilled professionals is greater than ever. This precarious situation is exacerbated by a high level of turnover with a third of registered nurses leaving their jobs in the last year impacting on the continuity of care that communities need.

“Social care nurses are a lifeline for people and communities across the UK, and it’s vital their contributions are recognised. They need to be supported and valued to deliver the best care they can to improve people’s health and wellbeing. Any long term workforce plan for social care needs to address this and a good starting point would be to deliver on commitments to support continuing professional development.”
